How to use CNC vertical lathe to process truck brake drum?

CNC vertical lathe is a machine tool used for metal processing. It controls the relative movement between the tool and the workpiece through the CNC system to achieve precise processing of the workpiece. Compared with traditional ordinary vertical lathes, CNC vertical lathes have a higher degree of automation and easier to control processing accuracy. It is mainly used to process rotating parts, such as discs, short shaft parts, etc.

The brake drum is usually in the shape of a drum, with a connection hole on the mounting surface, which is closely connected to the wheel hub and rotates with the brake wheel. The drum is equipped with brake shoes, brake wheel cylinders, return springs and other components. When the operator steps on the pedal, the brake master cylinder sends hydraulic oil pressure into the brake pipe and brakes. The brake wheel piston pushes the brake shoe outward under the action of hydraulic pressure, so that the brake shoe is in close contact with the cylindrical inner surface of the brake drum, and friction is generated between the two, thereby preventing the rotation of the brake drum, further stopping the wheel from stopping or rotating, and achieving vehicle braking.

1.Processing preparation

Blank inspection: Check whether the size of the brake drum blank meets the requirements and check whether there are obvious casting defects, such as sand holes, air holes, etc.

Clamping the workpiece: Clamp the brake drum blank on the workbench of the CNC vertical lathe, generally using a three-jaw chuck or a four-jaw chuck. When clamping, ensure the installation accuracy of the workpiece, align the workpiece, and overlap the spindle with the machine tool spindle.

Tool preparation: Select suitable tools according to the material and processing requirements of the brake drum, such as carbide tools for rough processing and tool tools for fine processing. Install the tool on the tool holder, pay attention to the installation position and angle of the tool, and ensure that the tool is extended in length and installed quickly.

Programming settings: Write CNC programs according to the processing technology of the brake drum, and set the processing parameters, including spindle, feed speed, cutting depth, etc. For example, the cutting depth can be set to 2-5mm during rough processing, and the cutting depth can be set to 0.2-0.5mm during fine processing; the cylindrical shape depends on the tool diameter and material.

2.Roughing stage

Roughing of outer circle: Start the machine tool and perform roughing of outer circle according to the CNC program. The tool starts layered cutting from the edge of the outer circle of the blank and gradually approaches the center, leaving a margin of 0.5-1mm for finishing.

Roughing of inner hole: After completing the roughing of the outer circle, roughing of the inner hole is performed. The same layered cutting method is used, and attention is paid to controlling the cylindricality and straightness of the inner hole, leaving a certain finishing allowance.

Roughing of end face: After roughing the inner hole and outer circle, roughing of the end face is performed to ensure the verticality of the end face and the tomato.

3.Finishing stage

Finishing of outer circle: After the roughing is completed, replace the finishing tool (if necessary) and perform finishing of the outer circle. Use a smaller feed rate and cutting depth to make the outer circle surface roughness reach Ra1.6-Ra3.2μm.

Finishing of inner hole: Then finish the inner hole, pay attention to ensuring the dimensional accuracy and surface quality of the inner hole. The surface roughness of the inner hole is generally required to reach about Ra1.6μm.

End face finishing: Finally, the end face finishing is performed to ensure that the flatness and surface roughness of the end face meet the requirements. The flatness tolerance is generally controlled within ±0.03mm.

4.Quality inspection and finished product processing

Quality inspection: Use measuring tools (such as calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, etc.) to inspect the size, shape and position tolerance and surface quality of the brake drum to ensure that the processed brake drum meets the design requirements.

Workpiece induction and cleaning: If the inspection is correct, the brake drum is inducted from the machine tool, the chips and oil on the surface of the brake drum are cleaned, and the machine tool is cleaned and cleaned at the same time.
